12/19 Blog Post
Out of my two years at POHS, this semester of ELA has been my favorite so far. The most meaningful thing to me so far has been seminars. I enjoy seminars in all my classes, but more so this year in ELA. The Alchemist and The Odyssey were challenging books for me, so participation in seminars helps me get a better idea of the book. The most challenging thing for me is doing response projects, just because of how long they take to complete. Doing creative writing responses in particular are the hardest for me, as I'm not really a creative person, and I usually get better grades on analytical or research papers. There is nothing I would really want to change about ELA, except for maybe having verbal reminders in class before having vocal quizzes. I would like the consistency of our seminars to stay the same, because I really enjoy having them so often. Overall this semester in ELA has been amazing, and I'm excited to see what next semester holds!

Creative responses are hard for me, too, but I like how we have to do them so we can become stronger in both analytical/research papers and creative projects.
ReplyDeleteThat's really the only way that a teacher could get his/her students to do each kind of project. If we were given free range for choosing the kind of project we wanted to do, most (if not all) people would choose what they're best at or what is the easiest, which is no way to learn new skills. It's a good and necessary system.
ReplyDeleteI agree, seminars definitely do help you get familiar with the book and I'm glad that we have them (for that reason).
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, ELA has definitely been great this semseter and I am also excited for next smeser's ELA clas :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, it is a lot easier to understand the book we're reading after having a seminar over it. I really like this setup.
ReplyDeleteI agree. ELA has been great this semester. The books have most certainly been thought provoking as well as oh so symbolic. However, as a lover of symbolism, I must say that when used correctly, it is drop dead gorgeous. While seminars are good, I have noticed that despite proactive efforts to involve quieter individuals, there are still the main two or three speakers. I know that I tend to talk quite a bit myself, but those who speak more need to be silent and think about what they are going to contribute before they do so in order to allow others to share their own ideas. As for analytical and creative work, I understand the struggle of being better at one over the other but by making the number of analytical and creative responses each person has equal, she allows for us to build upon our strengths and to improve our weaknesses. Overall, just great semester (c
